Identifying continual patterns of family dysfunction in the emergency and urgent care rooms of Park Nicollet, a team of physicians started Family Friends as a volunteer mentoring program with a mission to take a more proactive role with families in need. In 1987, Family Friends was registered as a 501(c) 3 as a Minnesota non profit corporation and in 1990, Family Friends partnered with the Minnetonka Baptist youth outreach program with Bud Boberg at the helm.
With the leadership of Bud, Family Friends established deep roots in the Minnetonka Public Schools working closely with the High Schools administrators and staff to support families in need beyond the scope of what the schools could provide. With the success of the High School program, Family Friends expanded in the year 2000 with Outreach Workers embedded in both Middle Schools. This model of placing outreach workers "in the trenches" has proven to increase access and ultimately support to those students and families in need.
Currently, Family Friends remains to be a referral based outreach program continuing to partner closely with the Minnetonka Public Schools as well as local community agencies. Outreach workers remain embedded in both the middle and secondary levels of the schools seeking out and serving those youth and families that may otherwise recieve no support.
Family Friends continues to charge no fees for services but relies on contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations and community organizations.
